THE Salcombe Chocolate Academy is celebrating after being named a finalist in the Devon Life Food and Drink Awards.
The company, which is only two months old, has been shortlisted, with two other firms, as Replica Corum Watch newcomer of the year, a category open to any business less than two years old.
Academy bosses said the firm only uses high-quality locally sourced ingredients, with its chocolate flavour developed using 70 per cent cacao, supplied by Fair Trade accredited providers.
The firm also offers courses, from 'chocolate shoe moulding', to truffle making and artisan techniques. These have become popular with businesses as team building activities, and for such events as hen parties.
The company also hosts children's parties, but bosses Fake Hats stressed all parties and courses have an educational element, with participants learning how chocolate is made, why chocolate can actually be good for you, and the history of the
embroidered patches confectionery.
The Academy, in Island Street, also runs the Chocaholics Cafe, which serves such things as alcoholic drinks, hot chocolate, pastries and baguettes.
Chocolate Academy director Andrew Cunningham, pictured below, said: "We are thrilled to have been shortlisted. We have worked solidly for the past three months. People said we were brave to open a business during a recession but we've been run off our feet."
The Devon Life Food and Drink Awards ceremony will be held in Exeter, on October 22.
